A brief of global shares on Thursday(7:41 AM - 07/03/2014)
U.S. stocks mostly rose on Thursday, with the S&P 500 closing at yet another record on better-than-expected jobless claims data and the European Central Bank's move to keep rates unchanged. But the overall sentiment was cautious ahead of Friday's all-important U.S. nonfarm payrolls report and tensions between Ukraine and Russia. Trading volume was also lower than average, with about 6.4 billion shares traded on U.S. exchanges, according to data from BATS Global Markets, below the daily average of about 7 billion in the past month. Thursday's milestone marked the S&P 500's fourth record closing high over the past six sessions.
A brief of global shares on Friday(10:15 AM - 08/03/2014)
U.S. stocks finished mostly higher on Friday, with the S&P 500 closing at a record after more jobs than expected were created in February and January's figure was revised higher. The S&P 500 ended at a record closing high for the second day in a row. Friday's milestone also was the S&P 500's fifth record closing high in the past seven sessions. But the overall sentiment was cautious and trading was volatile throughout the session as investors adjusted their positions ahead of the weekend and kept a close eye on the simmering crisis in Ukraine.
