Most of the world stock markets rose slightly on Friday, while the Vietnamese stock market rallied quite strongly. US stocks were mixed as investors digested new commentary on asset-purchase tapering and inflation from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, amid a slew of fresh earnings reports from major companies. The Dow set a record closing high, taking out a previous record close from August 16. The S&P 500 retreated after setting a fresh intraday record high. The reversal to the downside came as Powell said the central bank was "on track to begin a taper of our asset purchases that, if the economy evolves broadly as expected, will be completed by the middle of next year" during a virtual event hosted by the South African Reserve Bank Friday. Most of the world stock market increased quite strongly on the first day of the week, while the Vietnamese stock market was mixed. Wall street's stocks moved higher on Monday as investors awaited a slew of earnings results from the Big Tech companies, as well as a myriad of other corporations across industries this week. The Dow and S&P 500 set record intraday and closing highs. The Nasdaq gained, and shares of Tesla (TSLA) rallied to an all-time high with a market capitalization exceeding $1 trillion for the first time. U.S. West Texas intermediate (CL=F) crude oil prices topped $85 per barrel, reaching the highest level since 2014. The move tracked gains in Brent crude (BZ=F), the international benchmark, which jumped above $86 per barrel for its highest level since 2018 after Saudi Arabia's energy minister suggested in a Bloomberg interview that oil producers exercise caution in boosting output despite fast-rising prices. US stocks extended gains to set fresh record highs on Tuesday as investors took in another hefty set of earnings and economic data. All three major U.S. equity indexes moved higher. The S&P 500 and Dow each set all-time intraday highs, with equity investors proving resilient even in the face of ongoing supply chain challenges and elevated inflationary pressures. New data Tuesday showed consumer confidence rose for the first time in four months in October, with consumers' spending plans picking up even as inflation expectations reached a 13-year high.
